VAN PARK – A MUSICAL COMEDY (21 March – 1 April)

A huge hit at the inaugural Sydney Fringe Festival – starring John Paul Young, Steve Kilbey and an eclectic cast of musicians and actors. This is a musical comedy that even men need not fear.

The script was lovingly hand-crafted by well known documentary maker Greg Appel. Originally the result of a fleeting idea that he and Paul Clarke had while driving past a Caravan Park during the making of ‘A long way to the Top’ (ABC TV 2001). The music was then created by Greg’s brother Steve Appel who’s garage cabaret band ‘King Curly’ have become part of the show.

It is the story of a group of washed up rockers who wind up in a caravan park. Amongst these battle hardened creatures a sensitive young boy comes of age. But it is quite an unusual van park. Enter the exotic love interest and let the music begin. JPY’s seventies hit song ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ is a truly fitting finale.

‘Van Park’ was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the Fringe, and one of the successes of our first year. It sold fantastically well, to the point that we were turning audiences away at later performances. Greg has clearly hit on something that has broad appeal.
