21 CHUMP STREET (8-18 JUNE)
PRESENTED BY PURSUED BY BEAR
A fourteen minute musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights, Hamilton), 21 Chump Street is based on a true-story as reported by acclaimed NPR podcast and radio show, This American Life.
For the first time in Victoria, we tell the cautionary tale of Justin, a high school senior, and Naomi, the cute new girl he falls for in class. Justin goes to great lengths to oblige her request for marijuana in the hopes of winning her affection — only to find out that his crush is actually an undercover cop planted in the school to find drug dealers. 21 Chump Street confronts the issues of peer pressure and conformity in schools, and covers the stark divide between the sensible-seeming ‘war on drugs’ and the stark, unexpected realities of its enforcement.
