ANGELS IN AMERICA (16 August – 1 September)

Millenium Approaches – Part 1

By Tony Kushner
Directed by Peter Kalos

Winner of four Tony Awards and a Pulitzer prize, this play is set in New York in the Reagan years, the very first years of reports of a then mysterious disease in gay men – AIDS.

There are three interlinked storylines throughout the play, Roy Cohen, a corrupt lawyer and closet gay man; a Mormon couple, the wife, who struggles through prescription drug addiction and the husband who struggles to face his suppressed homosexuality; and a homosexual couple, whose once beautiful relationship is forced to endure the battle of long term illness.

A powerful work that is poignant, never loses its wicked sense of humour or it’s wrenching grasp on such timeless issues as life, death, sexual exploration and the awakenings that are encountered by working through life’s major tragedies and triumphs. A play with an uplifting modern edge -  exploring the possibility of achieving humanity through transcendence.

Peter Kalos has directed plays such as Dreamer Examines His Pillow, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Loose Ends, Luv and Waiting for Godot at the 3rd Street Theatre and at the Lee Strasberg Theatre in Los Angeles.
