Rapper/producer Birdz and artist Fred Leone are cousins by family, but brothers in music. Both hail from the Ngulungbura of the Butchulla nation, with Leone being one of only three Butchulla songmen.
Their EP GIRA (meaning ‘fire’ in Butchulla) fuses Birdz’s sharp, poetic lyricism with Aboriginal Creole, while Fred Leone’s vocals soar in both Butchulla and English. At the sound desk is Ngarrindjeri man and multi-platinum, ARIA Award-winning producer Trials, whose touch has helped shape the powerful sound of this EP.
The pair first collaborated on the fiery track ‘Bagi-la-m’ for the documentary Looky Looky Here Comes Cooky. With GIRA, they keep the flame burning – grounded in culture, truth-telling and unapologetic spirit, carrying the fire for generations past, present and future.
After premiering their collaboration at RISING Festival, Birdz and Fred Leone now bring GIRA to Chapel Off Chapel for a one-night-only Narrm performance that demands to be experienced live.
