Barry Conyngham’s opera FLY was created by the Victorian State Opera in 1984 and based on the life of the early Australian aeronautical engineer and explorer Lawrence Hargrave. The themes of Australian identity are as resonant today as they were 30 years ago so Lyric is undertaking the opera’s first revival to coincide with the anniversary of the end of World War 1 that frames the tragic action of the opera.

Before the full production, Lyric is undertaking a development week that will brings together the cast and creatives culminating in a public presentation. Alongside excerpts from the haunting music, you will hear from the director Lara Kerestes, Artistic Director and Conductor Pat Miller and be immersed in the designs of ZUNICA who are collaborating on the production.
