Stonnington Jazz Festival 2018
‘The word jazz means freedom of expression’ – Duke Ellington
Inventive and enduring, Duke Ellington was one of the most important composers, bandleaders and pianists in the history of popular music. The Far East Suite – his 1967 Grammy Award winning release – was his musical response to his tour through Syria, Jordan, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey and Japan – with his arrangements describing the awe, exhilaration and enchantment the band felt from this life-changing experience.
Taking inspiration from Ellington’s ambitious project, Steve Sedergreen has embarked on a quest to rework The Far East Suite for Stonnington Jazz. Sedergreen sets Ellington’s work in 2018, uniting over 18 musicians to recreate the work and take it on a new journey through Australia, Papua New Guinea, Gambia and to a new-age India and Japan.
