ABOUT US

At Chapel Off Chapel, we take pride in creating a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone. It’s our goal to provide a platform for artists to connect with their audiences and create memorable experiences.

Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is an integral part of Chapel Off Chapel operations.

Over the past few years, we’ve made significant progress in reducing our energy consumption and waste. We believe that small steps can make a big impact, which is why we’ve taken actions such as removing single-use plastics, installing refillable water bottle stations, and replacing disposable take away coffee cups.

We’ve also installed a powerful 23kW solar system on our roof and replaced over 470 lights across our site with energy-efficient LEDs. Not only do these upgrades save us energy and reduce our carbon footprint, but they also provide enhanced versatility for our theatre lighting.

In addition, we’ve added an airlock at the entrance to the venue to reduce air infiltration and heat loss, and we’ve replaced our gas hot water service with an electric heat pump system – eliminating the use of gas on site entirely.

We’re proud to be an all-electric site, with 100% of our power coming from renewable energy through VECO – the Victorian Energy Collaboration.

History

Chapel Off Chapel’s rich history began in 1858 when architects Thomas J Crouch and Ralph Wilson designed the independent bluestone church on Malvern Road Prahran. Originally intended to be built in stages, the church never reached its full potential as its planned masonry chancel and tower were never completed.

In 1862, Frederick W Nicholson built and exported an organ from England to Australia. Installed in the church in 1863, it was a grand addition to the building.

The Church Hall (now known as The Loft) was built in 1883, and it housed the Sunday School for many years.

After the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches united in 1977, the building ceased to be used as a church.

In 1980, the Prahran City Council purchased the building, and soon after the Church and Hall buildings opened as the Princes Gardens Recreation Centre in February 1989. The Centre featured a small community gym, dancing classes, martial arts, painting, drawing and art classes, and sat adjacent to tennis courts.

In the mid-1980s, Prahran City Council gifted the church’s organ to St. Patrick’s in Mentone under the condition that it be restored for use in worship. The organ remains in use there to this day.

In 1994, a foyer linking the Church and the Church Hall was constructed, and Chapel Off Chapel was established as an integrated arts, recreation and tourism centre by the newly formed City of Stonnington (the amalgamation of Prahran and Malvern Councils). On March 19, 1995, the venue officially opened its doors, solidifying its place in Melbourne’s history as a beloved arts and cultural hub.

As an arts venue, Chapel Off Chapel has welcomed over 1,000,000 people through its doors and hosted more than 20,000 artists and crew.
